About the release
The final extended EP by Themgoroth from Cieszyn, originally released by Dagdy Music in 1998. „Highway into the Unknown” takes the listener on a journey through the cold landscapes of atmospheric black metal, doom-laden harmonies and progressive keyboard passages. Melancholic melodies, heavy guitar passages and an aura of mystery shape the distinctive sound of the Polish underground in the second half of the 1990s. The cassette features the original EP alongside several bonus tracks taken from the debut album „Gate to the Unknown”. These original cassettes come directly from the publisher's archive and, after nearly three decades, are once again available to collectors.
Artist: Themgoroth
Themgoroth was formed in 1991 in Cieszyn, Poland. The band’s music developed at the intersection of black and doom metal, combining a heavy guitar sound with melancholic melodies and elaborate keyboard arrangements. Over time, it became increasingly atmospheric, gradually opening up to progressive influences. In 1994, Themgoroth recorded its first demo. The line-up at the time consisted of Piotr “Asmodeus” Dawid on guitar and vocals, bassist Piotr “Kiejstut” Deckert-Firla, drummer Marek “Askalon” Herrman and keyboardist Mariusz “Sammach”. The recording documented an early stage of the band’s activity, when its music was already reaching beyond the raw approach of black metal. In August 1995, the debut album, “Gate to the Unknown”, was recorded at Fors Studio in Český Těšín. The material developed Themgoroth’s atmospheric side, bringing together black metal expression, slower doom passages and melodic keyboard parts. Mood played an important role, as did the contrasts between the weight of the guitars and the space created by the keyboards. The next phase brought line-up changes and further stylistic exploration. In September 1998, two new tracks, “Highway into the Unknown” and “Is This You Maybe?”, were recorded at Cyber Studio in Katowice. Among those involved was Piotr “Smŕtan” Wójcik, the creator of Nirnaeth, who contributed the keyboard parts. The new material retained the melancholy of the band’s earlier work while taking its music in a more progressive direction. The recordings were released in October 1998 through Dagdy Music as the EP “Highway into the Unknown”. The release also included tracks from the “Gate to the Unknown” sessions. It remained Themgoroth’s final studio recording, bringing the band’s activity in the 1990s to a close. In 2026, Themgoroth’s history is brought together on “…the Unknown”, released on CD through Rariti.es. This farewell compilation contains all of the band’s surviving studio recordings: the remastered 1994 demo, the complete debut album “Gate to the Unknown” and tracks from the EP “Highway into the Unknown”. More than 72 minutes of music document Themgoroth’s entire artistic journey – from early atmospheric black metal, through doom-laden melancholy, to the progressive final chapter of the band’s activity.
